Rotate a background image

April 17th, 2008

I am not sure who the author of this script is but it is excellent to use with HTML pages and adds a little functionality.  Elements you need to change are all of the banner[0]=”Image01URL” lines with real URL’s http://www.mydomain.com/myimage.jpg for example. You will need to give the DIV or table/cell to rotate the background an ID of #header for example

Thats pretty much it. if you want to rotate less images change the line
var random=Math.floor(10*Math.random()); to a lesser number and remove some of the banner[0]=”Image01URL” lines. Well I a sure you get the idea.

Here is the script to copy and paste into the head tags of your HTML document or link to it as a separate .js file. Enjoy.

<!– Begin Rotate Script–>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
<!– var banner= new Array()
banner[0]=”Image01URL”
banner[1]=”Image02URL”
banner[2]=”Image03URL”
banner[3]=”Image04URL”
banner[4]=”Image05URL”
banner[5]=”Image06URL”
banner[6]=”Image07URL”
banner[7]=”Image08URL”
banner[8]=”Image09URL”
banner[9]=”Image10URL”
var random=Math.floor(10*Math.random());
document.write(”<style>”);
document.write(”#header {”);
document.write(’ background:url(”‘ + banner[random] + ‘”)
no-repeat top left;’); document.write(” }”);
document.write(”</style>”); // –></script>
<!– End Rotate Script–>

On a roll.

This painting was completed on the same day as the previous post. My eye picked up on the beautiful rich blue the shadows were creating.

South Downs Evening

Approaching Berwick

April 13th, 2008

A short walk on the Downs one morning and a quick paint of this winter light. I like to try and paint quickly giving an impression of a place and avoid getting too fussy. Using big brushes for the majority of the painting helps keep the simplicity.

Berwick

Painting en plein air

April 13th, 2008

Well I like to paint and haven’t done for quite a while due to my busy schedule but intent to get back to it very soon. I like nothing more than to be out in the open early morning or late evening with few people about. The busy world we live in has not awoken yet and the peace and quiet is as inspiring as the finished article. I love visiting the local marsh or the foot of the South Downs to paint.

Light interests me more than the subject in fact one of my personal favourite paintings featured a village corner scene with a yellow skip awaiting collection. It had nothing to do with the subject really. The yellow skip provided a balance to the picture, a feeling work was about to start but the workers were not yet there yet or finishing their morning cup of tea. I struggle to keep the subject as secondary. Don’t get me wrong the composition is important and of course subject is part of this but to me a modern bungalow in the right light and atmosphere is as interesting as a castle in the mist.

Stretching out with a fresh look

April 13th, 2008

We have just completed a site for Grosvenor Limousines. They are really happy with the result and with the fresh look business is looking good. Competition in the Oxford limo hire business and surrounding area on the internet is fierce. It was time for a redesign to try and keep up with the other sites out there. We incorporated some flash elements to show the cars off quickly to visitors and restructured the site so visitors could navigate easily. An important element was to maintain and improve on the structure of the site so it read well for search engine spiders and potential customers. So if you need Limo hire in Oxford or Northamptonshire give the site a visit.

MAMP PHP/MYSQL Environment

April 11th, 2008

I was about to install mysql on my Imac 24″ when I notice something called MAMP. Now I remember WAMP in the days where I wanted to run a server on my old PC . . . so 10 minutes later I have MAMP installed and up and running. What a wonderful program it is.

Thank you to all of those people out there offering such wonderful open source software like this.I now have Windows XP pro running with Internet Information Services (IIS) so I can run and develop ASP solutions. Again what a fantastic piece of software and extremely well priced. May I also recommend the company I bought it from in the UK. ordered on a Tuesday at 2pm and arrived on Wednesday by 3pm.

Click the link if you want Parallels to run different OS on a MAC and live in the UK

So anyhow I have my new Imac. My Adobe CS3 package, my all important Itunes.  Everything is go.  CS3 by the way for all those who want to know is worth every penny. I love the new way Illustrator integrates the smart objects into Adobe Photoshop. Truly wonderful.

Think Sideways

April 11th, 2008

It is very easy to spend all your time worrying that you don’t have top spot for a particular keyword but remember there are lots of secondary keywords that people search for and some are more fought over than others. Lets say that “Tennis Holidays UK” has an enormous amount of people fighting for top place and some well established companies that take the first 10 spots. Stop and think how others may search and what they may search for. Tennis Breaks for example, “UK Tennis Holidays“, or “Tennis Coaching Holidays”.

It may be far more realistic for the time being to aim a little lower. Get people to your site, get some traffic flowing using alternate keywording. A good place to check on search volumes these days is the Google Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool . This tool is used to see what search volume there is for a particular word before setting up a Google Adword campaign and can be very useful to see if people are searching for a particular phrase and gives suggestions on other phrases that may be useful. One nifty trick to get search engine traffic can be to use misspelled keywords within your sites Meta Description or Title of the page. Be careful though you don’t want to make yourself look silly. Lets say someone searches for UK Tennia Holidays or Tennis Hilidays, typing fast they have knocked a key on their keyboard by mistake and press enter. When they look up you may very well be top of the search engines and they click on your website rather than retype the correct term. The long and the short of it is, make sure that your website involves secondary keywording to get maximum traffic.

Keywords in the URL

April 11th, 2008

Something that I think makes a diffrence, Google and Yahoo seem to give preference to sites that have the keyword in the filename/URL. For example www.ufo-design.co.uk/graphic_design.php would be a good idea on a page about graphic design. I have seen improved results by using this structure but beware placing files inside directories that are named the same or overusing keywords in URL’s you can be sure keyword spamming comes into play and you will get penalised.

When you search for a phrase in Google look at the URL of the website link in the results. You can see it has been cached or at least appears to be so as it is in bold text.

Snow in Spring?

April 11th, 2008

Well on my way to my nephews christening we got stuck in snow, yes snow in the South of England in April? and it really snowed to the point I nearly had to turn back round. So glad we didn’t as it clearedup past the Dartford Tunnel and we made it back to the South East to see it carpeted in white. My kids had to stay at home with their mum, there wasn’t enough room in the car, shame I missed the snowball fights.
